When the Seasons Change

Fall and Your Nervous System

Supporting your nervous system with gentle care and Craniosacral Fascial Therapy

There is something beautiful about the shift into fall. The air feels different, the light softens, and familiar routines return. Alongside that beauty, though, comes a lot of adjusting. School mornings, daycare drop-offs, work schedules, and the first round of seasonal illnesses can leave a family feeling stretched before the day has really begun.

As a mom of three, I understand how full those transitions can feel. You can be grateful for your life and still need a moment to catch your breath. Your child can love school and still come home with very little left to give.

Sometimes we notice the demands in our bodies first: a clenched jaw, shoulders that keep creeping upward, or the feeling of being tired but unable to settle. These experiences deserve attention and compassion. They can be an invitation to consider what support and recovery might look like in this season.

What nervous system regulation means

Your nervous system helps you respond to what is happening around you and within your body. Regulation is the ability to shift between states as circumstances change: becoming alert when you need to act, then settling enough to rest, connect, and recover. Everyone moves through these states throughout the day.

When life is demanding, those transitions can feel harder. You may find yourself answering a simple question more sharply than you intended or lying awake after a long day. A child may seek extra closeness, become restless, or struggle with a routine that usually feels manageable. Sleep, pain, illness, sensory demands, and emotional stress can all contribute, so it helps to stay curious about the whole picture.

Where fascia and gentle touch fit in

Fascia is connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles and other structures throughout the body. When we feel stressed or uncomfortable, we may brace our muscles, hold our breath, or move less freely. You might notice this while driving, working at a computer, or carrying your baby.

Craniosacral Fascial Therapy, or CFT, is a gentle hands-on approach focused on the head, spine, and connective tissues. At Warm Heart Wellness, I adapt contact and positioning to each person’s comfort, paying attention to their movement, preferences, and responses. There is room to change positions, take a break, or stop whenever needed. Some people describe feeling relaxed during or after a session. They may notice that they have unclenched their jaw or become more aware of how they are holding their body. Often they describe the "cobwebs being taken away" and mental clarity returning.

Supporting children through changing routines

Children often show us how they are doing through their behavior before they can explain it in words. A child who manages a busy school day may cry over a small disappointment at home. Another may need to move, seek a cuddle, or spend some time alone before talking about the day.

It can help to pause and ask: Are they hungry? Tired? Have they had any time without instructions or expectations? Understanding what might be underneath a hard moment can guide our response while we continue to hold caring, consistent boundaries.

For children who welcome touch, a CFT session can offer time and individual attention at their pace. Sessions may include play, movement, caregiver involvement, and frequent breaks. I pay attention to a child’s willingness to participate, including the ways they communicate without words. A child does not need to lie perfectly still to be heard and respected.

Small ways to make room for recovery

Support also happens in ordinary moments between appointments. A predictable after-school routine, a snack before the next activity, or a few minutes outside can give a child a gentler transition. Some children enjoy active play; others prefer quiet or closeness. Their needs may change from day to day.

For parents, recovery may need to fit into smaller spaces. Put your feet on the floor while you drink your coffee. Notice whether you are clenching your jaw. Take a short walk when you can, or let one part of the evening be simpler. You deserve care even when the to-do list is unfinished.

Persistent changes in sleep, pain, mood, or your child’s functioning are worth discussing with an appropriate healthcare professional. There may be more to understand than a busy season alone.

A place to pause this fall

At Warm Heart Wellness, I want you and/or your child to feel listened to. Care begins with understanding what feels difficult, what matters to you, and what kind of support fits your family.

If you are interested in gentle hands-on care, I would be happy to talk with you about CFT and whether it fits your goals. You are welcome to arrive with questions, a busy mind, or a child who needs to move. We can begin right where you are.
